Harmony of Change

Marian Anderson, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Power of Music

Martin Luther King Jr. attended the Marian Anderson concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 where 75,000 people attended. He was 10 years old and it made such a strong impression on him that he wrote an award winning essay about it at 16 and it was an inspiration for the March on Washington in 1963. He personally asked Marian Anderson to sing at the March that year, which she did. 200,000 people attended the March on Washington where he gave his “I have a Dream” speech.
